The Huntsville Municipal Golf Course, a.k.a. ‘The Muni’, was renamed in 2001 to the Becky Peirce Golf Course (BPGC). The course is located 3 miles from downtown Huntsville, Alabama and is open to the public 363 days a year, weather permitting. BPGC is a 18 hole, par 72 layout with bent grass greens and Bermuda tees, fairways and rough. The course measures over 6900 yards from the Black championship tees. The course rating is 73.0 and has a slope of 128 (Black tees). The facility also offers a driving range, short game practice area, putting green and snack bar. ‘The Muni’ has been proudly managed by Robertson Golf management, Inc. since 1989. Following is a brief description of each hole.
No. 1 – Par 4, 361 yards
(Black tees) The course begins with an easy starting hole, a short slight dog leg to the left. A pond runs down the entire left side of the fairway and guards the green in front. Hook it off the tee or on your approach shot and you will surely find the water. A bunker guards the downhill approach shot to the green on the right.
No. 2 – Par 4, 471 yards
(Black tees) You must hit your tee shot long and straight. There is water on both the left and right sides of the fairway. Must be accurate with the approach shot with a mid to long iron. A series of grass and sand bunkers guards the left side of this fairly small, elusive green.
No.3 – Par 5, 558 yards
(Black tees) The picturesque little pond to the right of the tee does not really come into play. The hole is longer than it appears because the first two shots are slightly uphill, although the long hitter can get home in two. Watch the bunker on the left of the green on your approach shot, it comes into play with a back left pin placement.
No.4 – Par 4, 370 yards
(Black tees) This hole is the first of two holes running parallel to South Memorial Parkway on the golf course. The pond on the right side of the fairway can be reached by a long hitter. A straight drive will leave an approach shot with a medium to short iron to a slightly elevated green. A bunker guards the front right of the green from any short misses.
No. 5 – Par 3, 236 yards
(Black tees) This hole is one of the course’s signature holes. A fantastic par 3, scenic and challenging for both the average golfer and skilled player. The tee shot is almost all carry over the pond in front of the green. There is room to play it safe short and right.
No.6 – par 5, 575 yards
(Black tees) From an elevated tee, the tee shot must be hit straight, woods are guarding the left side and a pond on the right can be reached by a long hitter. A blind second shot makes the green hard to reach in two and the bunkers guarding the green are waiting for your approach shot. Best way to play this hole is three shots.
No.7 – Par 4, 459 yards
(Black tees) Another excellent par 4, your tee shot must avoid the bunker on the right and the sloping rough on the left side of the fairway. The approach shot is one of the most difficult on the course to a small kidney shaped green. The green is guarded by a bunker on the left to keep your ball from rolling down the hill. You can miss your approach shot right and have an easy up and down for par.
No.8 – Par 3, 214 yards
(Black tees) You need to hit an accurate long iron here; bunkers guard the right side of green. Do not miss this green long or way right or it will leave you with a tough up-and-down.
No.9 – Par 4, 330 yards
(Black tees) This hole is a short par 4 that can be driven with an accurate long tee shot. Do not miss it left; out-of-bounds is waiting in the driving range. The approach shot can be hit with a short iron or wedge to a slight elevated green. Make sure you hit enough club to carry the bunker short right on your approach shot.
No.10 – Par 5, 519 yards
(Black Tees) This is a reachable par 5 with two well placed shots to an elevated small green. A set of bunkers guards the right side of the green on your approach shot. Make the right club selection to the elevated green on your approach.
No.11 – Par 4, 423 yards
(Black tees) A slight dogleg left out of the chute from the black tees. Favor the right side of the fairway, a drive pulled left will be in the pine trees or run into the pond (for a long hitter). A mid to short iron will reach the green which has a series of three bunkers guarding the right and back for any errant shots. An approach shot hit short and left will end up in the pond to the left of the green.
No.12 – par 4, 332 yards
(Black tees) It’s the shortest hole on the golf course but it plays uphill the entire hole. Grass bunkers are waiting on your tee shot if you miss it left or right. Your approach must be accurate to carry the greenside pot bunker.
No.13 – par 3, 212 yards
(Black tees) A downhill tee shot that looks shorter than it is. The approach must be accurate to a green guarded by bunkers long and short. Pick the right club and trust it.
No.14- par 4, 357 yards
(Black tees) This hole is a short but difficult par 4 with a sharp dogleg right; the corner of the dogleg guarded by trees. The hole should be played with a hybrid or long iron off the tee to the top of the hill. Your approach shot must land short and will roll onto the green. Any approach shot missed right, left or long will roll off the green in the bunker, pond or down the hill.
No.15- par 3, 135 yards
(Black tees) A short par 3 where you must pick the right club; the green is surrounded by bunkers. A ball that is hit right or long will roll down the hill and almost guarantees a bogey or worse.
No.16 – par 4, 422 yards
(Black tees) Dogleg right where long hitters can carry the corner but a mishit drive will leave you in the fairway bunker with a difficult approach shot. The approach shot can be played from the fairway with a mid to short iron to a small narrow green that has a complex of bunkers on the right and rough and woods on a left or long on the approach shot.
No.17 – par 4, 371 yards
(Black tees) A straight away short par 4; a straight drive will miss the fairway bunkers both left and right in the landing zone. The approach shot must be accurate to the elevated heavily bunkered green.
No.18 – par 5, 560 yards
(Black tees) If you are going for it in two, the tee shot must be long and accurate to the flat plateau; your tee shot must avoid the lake on the left and the trees and bunker on the right. A good layup shot is short of the big hill and will leave a short iron or wedge to a narrow deep green guarded on the right side by a complex of bunkers.
