Course History

The original Huntsville City golf course was a modest little nine hole layout built in 1955 alongside the old Huntsville airport. In 1959, an additional nine holes was completed and opened for play with the clubhouse located on the end of Golf Road. The golf course always got a lot of play, but it was a pretty ordinary layout with a bland collection of short par fours and par fives.

In the early 80’s many of the city golfers began deserting the course to play other courses in the outlying areas of Huntsville. In 1983, the Mayor, City Council and the Golf Advisory committee agreed fund and build a quality golf course. The city then spent $3,000,000 dollars and 2 1/2 years to build what the current golf course layout known as the Huntsville Municipal Golf Course, a.k.a. ‘The Muni’. The new course was an 18 hole, par 72, 6300 yards in length, championship layout with Bent grass greens and Bermuda tees, fairways and rough. The layout featured seven ponds and over 45 sand bunkers.

In 2001, the golf course was renamed for Ms. Becky Peirce, whom had for more than two decades championed the course’s problems and help push the City into building this new course. She fussed, fumed, cajoled, harangued, pleaded and argued for the course. She wrote countless letters, made repeated phone calls, showed up at any number of public and private meetings. She never let up and she never gave up. She always said “one of these days, Huntsville is going to have a great public golf course, the kind of course a city like this deserves. I’m not going to shut up until we get it. I just hope I live to see it. Well, she not only lived to see it finished in 1987, but she lived to see it named in her honor in 2001.

In 1989 the City leased the course operation and maintenance to Robertson Golf Management, Inc. They have made numerous changes to the course over the past 10+ years including reversing the nines to improve pace-of-play to adding new Black championship tees to stretching the course yardage to over 6900 yards.
The Becky Peirce Municipal Golf Course established in 1955, has stood the test of time and is known in Huntsville as ‘The Muni’.
